ASilicon Valley is a 20-mile stretch of the Bay Area that is home to around three million people. Covering portions of northwestern Santa Clara County and the southern areas of Alameda and San Mateo Counties, major cities in Silicon Valley include Redwood City, Palo Alto, Milpitas, Cupertino, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and San Jose.
AAlways a center of innovation and technology, Silicon Valley began its foray into technology and research at Stanford University and the Sunnyvale US Naval Airbase. In the 1950s, innovators began researching the silicon transistor and the computer semiconductor was born. In 1971, as electronics and computer companies began to spring up in the region, Ralph Vaerst, the founder of Ion Equipment Corp., suggested the name to an Electronic News reporter and it stuck. Today, Silicon Valley is a hub of research.
