Founded by U.S. Senator Leland Stanford and his wife in 1885, Leland Stanford Junior University is a private research university located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Consistently ranked as one of the world's top 10 universities, Stanford is lauded for its superior academics and innovative accomplishments, especially in the science and technology fields. The university has an arts and sciences focus, offering 40 undergraduate and graduate departments and four professional schools focused in the areas of education, business, law, and medicine. Stanford is home to eighteen independent laboratories, centers, and institutes including the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute, Stanford Healthcare, and Lucille Packard Children's Hospital.

  • How can I get around the Stanford University campus?

    The Stanford campus is very bicycle friendly, with paved pathways, bike lockers and 19,000 bike parking rack spaces available. If you're looking for motorized transportation, the Marguerite Shuttle offers free, on-campus transportation to visitors and students. Busses are wheelchair accessible and offer bicycle racks. Marguerite Shuttle busses run Monday-Friday, year round, except campus holidays. Schedules vary based on the line, so check the transportation page for details.
  • What kinds of tours are offered at Stanford?

    Individual visitors and groups of 8 or less can take a free campus walking tour. The 70-minute, student-led tour takes visitors through the main campus, stopping at highlights like the Main Quad, Memorial Church and White Plaza. Walking tours are offered daily at 11:30am and 3:30pm. Reservations are recommended but not required. Group tours for 9 or more can be reserved two weeks in advance of your visit.
